TYPES OF ESSAY : ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY

DEFINITION : An argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the writer to investigate a topic, collect evidence, and evaluate it in order to establish a clear position on the subject. The writer then presents and defends their stance with logical reasoning, solid evidence, and persuasive techniques, aiming to convince the reader of the validity of their argument.

• Thesis Statement : A clear and concise statement that expresses the main argument or position on the topic. It typically appears at the end of the introduction. 

• Introduction : Introduces the topic, provides background information, and presents the thesis statement 

• Body Paragraphs : Each body paragraph focuses on one main point or piece of evidence supporting the thesis. They often include topic sentence, evidence, explaination and counterarguments. 

• Conclusion : Summarizes the argument, restates the thesis in light of the evidence, and often leaves the reader with a final thought or call to action.

 

Introduction :

• Hook : A compelling sentence to grab the reader’s attention.
  
• Background information : Provides context and introduces the topic.
• Thesis statement : Presents the writer’s main argument or position.

Body Paragraphs (Typically 3-4 paragraphs) :

• Paragraph 1 : Main point with supporting evidence and analysis.
  
• Paragraph 2 : Another point supporting the thesis with evidence and analysis. 
• Paragraph 3 : Acknowledgement of counterarguments and refutation.
• Optional additional paragraphs : More evidence or examples if needed.

Conclusion :

• Restates the thesis in a new way.
• Summarizes the key points.
  
• Offers a final thought or call to action.
